Among poultry and dairy ranches of Sonoma County, lies Petaluma; home to Holly Solar Products. With a 4800 square foot facility, teeming with an array of tools, materials and insight, Holly Solar is not just a manufacturer and solutions provider but design house, think tank and research laboratory.
Holly Solar Products was founded in 1974 by Bill Hollibaugh with the introduction of The Holly Hydro Heater; a stainless-steel water jacket that heated water in wood burning stoves. We no longer manufacture the Holly Hydro but over it 20 year production span, it still can be found in many self-sufficient homes.
During 1970’s, Bill instructed a workshop in Mendocino County, titled Back to Basics: Living off the land self-sufficiently. In this course, he taught students the fundamentals of survival through sustainability.
In the 1980’s, Bill was a frequent guest of radio host, Owen Span, on San Francisco’s AM news talk station: KGO. The show featured low-tech, urban methods of off grid living and practical tips on cutting utilities through conservation; earning Bill the nickname of Mr. Wilderness.
As developments in alternative energy surfaced, Bill began exploring solar photovoltaics. In the mid 1980's Holly Solar began manufacturing products for Real Goods, Jade Mountain and other smaller, alternative-energy startups. As demand grew, Holly Solar supplied companies with custom manufactured products, designed to meet specialized needs.
Bill Hollibaugh is an artist, teacher and inventor. Inspired as a apprentice of R. Buckminster Fuller and with a hands on approach, Hollibaugh develops practical solutions for a sustainable future. With a BA in Fine Arts, a Lifetime Teaching Credential from the CCA and with skills ranging from carpentry to engineering, Bill is a definitive example of a modern day entrepreneur and craftsman.
